Day One Results
NEWPORT COAST, Calif. (SMU) - SMU Mustangs senior Harry Higgs shot consecutive four-under rounds to earn a first place position heading into the final round at the Gifford Collegiate. SMU is in third as a team at even par after leading for a portion of the first round on Monday.
Higgs carded 10 birdies and an eagle over the two rounds, finishing each with a score of 66, good for four-under par on the par-70 layout. Higgs currently holds a two-shot edge over Rico Hoey and Anthony Paolucci of USC.
"It was great playing for Harry," SMU Head Coach Josh Gregory said. "I have always known he was capable of this and today he put it together."
Sophomores Bryson Dechambeau and Ryan Burgess are both tied for 16th at one-over par. Burgess finished the first round at two-under, and even led for a period of time during the morning. The second-year player carded a three-over 73 in the afternoon, however, to drop back to one-over for the tournament.
SMU is tied for third in the team standings with USC. No. 1 Alabama leads at nine-under, with Northwestern close behind three shots back. Sixth-ranked Washington rounds out the top five, one shot behind SMU and USC. Hosts UCLA, ranked 13th in the nation, are sixth at four-over.
"It was a good day for the team, we just made too many doubles," Gregory said. "But we have a chance tomorrow to have a great finish against an elite field."
