LEWISVILLE, Texas (SMU) - For the second night in a row, senior Rachel Nicol and sophomore Tara-Lynn Nicholas swept the breaststroke heats to help lead the SMU women's swimming and diving team to a third-place finish at the 21st annual SMU Classic. The Mustangs also closed the event with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
"They really competed at a high level this weekend," Head Coach Steve Collins said. "We came into the meet trying to challenge the best teams and enjoyed working together as a team."
Nicol finished with a time of 2:10.11 in the championship heat, while Nicholas clocked in at 2:13.40 in the consolation final to gain valuable points toward the Mustangs' team total.
In the final event of the Classic, senior Nathalie Lindborg out-touched USC's Evan Swenson for a 1:31.34 mark in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The event-winning SMU group also included senior Isabella Arcila, sophomore Marne Erasmus and freshman Adrienn Santa.
The event kicked off with the other relay of the night, the 200-yard medley relay. SMU earned runner-up honors with Arcila, Nicholas, Erasmus and N. Lindborg clocking in at 1:39.35.
Sophomore Ursa Bezan earned the Ponies' other runner-up honor in a championship final as she touched the wall in 4:46.67 in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Kirsty McLauchlan placed third in the event's consolation final.
Arcila, Nicol, and N. Lindborg also earned 12 points apiece for the Mustangs with third-place finishes in the championship finals of the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle, respectively.
In three-meter diving action, freshman Madeline Wainman posted a 264, which was good for fifth place and a 10-point boost for the Mustangs.
LSU won the event with a team total of 319, while Louisville was second with 301.50 points. SMU's total of 296 was 13 points ahead of fourth-place USC (283), and N.C. State (235.50) and Miami (218) rounded out the group.
"I am very proud of everything we were able to accomplish this weekend," Collins added. "The last relay was a highlight and a great way to move forward."
The Mustangs are back in action for a pair of events at the end of the month. SMU hosts Rice on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. CT and Houston on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. Both events will be held at the Mansfield Natatorium and live results will be available.
