NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) – The SMU women’s track and field team opened up the 2015 season with a second-place finish at the J.D. Martin Invitational on Saturday at the University of Oklahoma’s Mosier Indoor Facility.
The Mustangs finished with 73 total points, 11 points ahead of third-place Grambling State. Host Oklahoma won the seven-team event with 222 points.
“I saw enough at this meet to be excited about our potential,” said head coach Dave Wollman. “That being said, we have a lot of work to do and little time to accomplish it.”
Freshman Isabella Marten headlined the Mustangs’ day, winning the triple jump (1.63m) in her first collegiate meet. Stephanie Kalu and Holly Archer also recorded first-place finishes for SMU, as Kalu won the 60-meter dash (7.45) and Archer grabbed first place in the mile (5:05.29).
In addition to Archer, four other Mustangs placed in the top six in the mile. Caitlin Keen finished third (5:07.66) with Melanie Stemper following right behind in fourth (5:07.76). Shanoah Souza rounded out the top five (5:10.05) and Agnes Sjöström finished in sixth (5:14.97).
In the throwing events, Rayann Chin and Tochi Nlemchi both turned in solid outings. Chin placed third in the weight throw (18.17m) and fifth in the shot put (14.37m). Nlemchi, a sophomore, finished one spot ahead of Chin in the shot put with a fourth-place finish (14.89m).
Freshman Jacquetta Cannon, in her first meet as a Mustang, finished 10th in the shot put (11.48m). Fellow freshman Anna Novosadova had a strong collegiate debut as well, placing seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (9.48).
Lucija Cvitanovic also had a fine day in the field events, finishing second in the triple jump (1.63m) and 14th in the shot put (11.09m).
The Mustangs’ relay team of Rachel Scruggs, Novosadova, Kalu and Courtney Tibbetts ended the day with a fifth-place finish in the 4x440-yard relay.
“Everyone from here on in has to be all in for us to achieve our team goals,” said Wollman. “We have to develop a sense of urgency and get the job done. I believe in these girls and know the effort will be there.”
Up next for SMU is the Vanderbilt Invitational on Jan. 23-24.
