NASHVILLE, Tenn. (SMU) - Senior sprinter Stephanie Kalu headlined the final day of the Vanderbilt Invitational for SMU, as the Mustangs concluded the two-day event on Saturday at Vanderbilt's Student Rec Center.
In a star-studded field, featuring three ranked schools and several of the Southeastern Conference's top schools, Kalu finished second in the 60-meter (7.33) and third in the 200-meter (24.21).
In the distance events, SMU continued its success in Nashville, as Karoline Skatteboe finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run (9:38.35). Holly Archer and Agnes Sjöström also placed in the top-15. Archer crossed the finish line 10th (9:46.48) and Sjöström placed 12th (9:53.98).
A day after finishing second in the 5,000-meter run, senior Caitlin Keen finished 12th in the mile run (4.58.61).
In the field events, SMU had three student-athletes finish in the top 15 of the shot put, with Tochi Nlemchi leading the way with a fifth-place (15.19m). Rayann Chin followed in sixth (15.07m) and freshman Jacquetta Cannon placed 13th (13.20m).
Carly Shuttlesworth was the Mustangs' top finisher in the long jump, finishing 29th (4.52m).
The Mustangs then ended the night with an eighth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
"Yesterday, the bear woke up; today she seemed hungry," SMU Director of Track and Field Dave Wollman said. "A lot can happen in one week. We increased intensity in training and the athletes stepped up with a big time weekend performance. We moved up in the conference rankings in every event we competed in.
"Every team sets goals, and this team has the character needed to achieve them. We are pleased with our progress and all goals are alive and well as we head into week three. We just need to keep working hard. This is a fun group to watch compete."
SMU returns to action next week with the Houston Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31.
