ERIN, Wis. (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team finished day one in first place at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate at Erin Hills Golf Course. The Mustangs shot 8-under-par (280) in the opening 18 holes and maintain a 2-stroke lead over second-place Oklahoma State (-6, 282). SMU junior Andrew Buchanan sits atop the leaderboard after carding a 67 (-5) on the day.
The Mustangs led the 11-team field with 21 under-par finishes, 20 of which were birdies and one eagle.
"I am very happy with our teams effort today," said SMU Head Coach Jason Enloe. "The guys played great."
Buchanan, the Los Altos, California-native, finished 5-under-par and notched eight birdies on the day, four on both sides of the turn. The junior sits 1-stroke ahead of the second-place finisher Jonathan Garrick of UCLA (-4, 68).
Senior Austin Smotherman also impressed the field finishing tied for third, carding an unblemished first round finishing 3-under (69). Smotherman posted three birdies and 15 pars on the day, paring the final 12 holes.
Alex Higgs continued his early season success, finishing the day (-1, 71) tied for 11th, with three birdies. Gray Townsend, finished 1-over par (73), while Ryan Burgess carded a 79 on the day (+7). The two finished tied for 23rd and tied for 60th, respectively.
"We will get Ryan going tomorrow and try to just keep playing our game," said Enloe.
