DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team has announced a five-match spring schedule, which is highlighted by three home dates and features MLS, USL Pro and NPSL competition.
The Mustangs begin matches on Saturday, February 21, when they travel to Austin to take on the Austin Aztex of the USL Pro. In 2013, the Aztex won the Southern Conference Championship and went on to win the USL PDL Championship as well. The 2015 season will mark the first year that Austin will compete as a professional franchise. Mustang alum Leone Cruz is a current member of the Aztex squad.
On Thursday, February 26, the Mustangs face a second USL Pro team in Arizona United SC, who is the affiliate of local MLS club FC Dallas. In its second season last year, the team finished ninth in the regular season standings and reached the Fourth Round of the US Open Cup.
After a brief hiatus, SMU returns to action as it travels north to Frisco to face the FC Dallas Reserves on Monday, March 23.
To close out the schedule, the Mustangs host a pair of NPSL teams in the Tulsa Athletics (March 29) and Fort Worth Vaqueros (April 11). In 2013, Tulsa's inaugural season in the league, the team won the South Central Conference, Regular Season Championship and made an appearance in the Regional Final. Fort Worth is also a member of the South Central Conference that made its first appearance during the 2014 season.
All home events are held at Westcott Field and admission is free.
SMU finished the 2014 season third in the American Athletic Conference regular season standings and made an appearance in the conference semifinals.
