FORT WORTH, Texas -- Three Mustangs won gold medals at the TCU Invitational on Friday, as the SMU women's track & field team concluded action at the Fort Worth Meet on a rain-soaked day at the Lowdon Track & Field Complex.
"With the American Athletic Conference Championship being held in Connecticut this year, we know to expect almost any weather pattern," said head coach Dave Wollman. "Today was a very good day to validate warmup routines in cold, wet weather. All of the athletes kept a good head and used the day to move forward in experience under poor conditions."
Holly Archer, Stephanie Kalu and Isabella Marten all earned gold for the Mustangs. Archer finished first in the 800-meter (2:13.28) and Kalu won the 100-meter dash (11.67), while Marten, a freshman, won the gold medal in the triple jump (12.09m).
The Mustangs' distance crew put together an impressive performance in Fort Worth. Shanoah Souza finished second in the 3,000-meter (10:06.68) and fourth in the 1,500-meter (4:36.38), while Caitlin Keen placed eighth in the 1,500-meter (4:40.97) and third in the 3,000-meter (10:07.51). Karoline Skatteboe was SMU's top finisher in the 1,500-meter, finishing second (4:35.75), and also placed 18th in the 800-meter (2:23.62).
Melanie Stemper, Claire Trotter and Julie Vanderhout also ran in distance events. Stemper finished 12th in the 1,500-meter (4:46.35), while Trotter's best finish was an 11th-place finish in the 3,000-meter (10:53.73) and Vanderhout's was a 15th-place finish in the 3,000-meter (11:21.69).
SMU's trio of Rayann Chin, Tochi Nlemchi and Jacquetta Cannon performed well in the throwing events. Chin finished fourth in the discus (48.09m) and sixth in the shot put (13.95m). Nlemchi placed sixth in the discus (45.29m) and fifth in the shot (14.12m). Cannon, a freshman, finished 11th in the discus (39.01m) and seventh in the shot (13.92m). Lucija Cvitanovic also competed in the shot put, placing 15th (10.13m).
Freshman Anna Novosadova was the Mustangs' top hurdler of the meet, finishing 16th in the 100-meter hurdles (15.43) and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.59).
Senior Craishia Washington competed in the 100-meter dash, finishing 14th (12.26), and Carly Shuttlesworth placed ninth in the long jump (4.69m).
"The times and results were a little off, but progress was definitely made," said Wollman.
Up next for the Mustangs are the Texas Relays, hosted by the University of Texas, on March 25-28.
