SMU Completes Split-Squad Weekend

March 28, 2015

RESULTS: Bobcat Invitational | Texas Relays SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Lucija Cvitanovic, Tochi Nlemchi and Isabella Marten all won gold medals on Saturday, as the SMU track & field team concluded split-squad action this weekend at the Bobcat Invitational and Texas Relays.

"We accomplished a number of things," said head coach Dave Wollman.  "The highlight of the weekend came in the field events.  Tochi took over the top conference mark in the shot put, Rayann [Chin] took over the lead in the discus and Jacquetta [Cannon] had a lifetime best and moved into fifth in the conference in the shot put."

Cvitanovic won the javelin competition (46.12m), Nlemchi won the shot put (15.49m) and Marten finished first in the triple jump (13.21m).

"The top performance of the weekend was Isabella Marten in the triple jump with one of the nation's top marks," said Wollman.

Nlemchi also competed in the discus, placing 14th (44.22m), and Marten added a fourth-place finish in the high jump (1.65m).

In the throwing events, Rayann Chin finished fourth in the shot (14.07m), fifth in the discus (50.59m) and 12th in the hammer (51.30m).  Jacquetta Cannon placed fifth in the shot (14.00m) and 19th in the discus (40.65m).

Senior sprinter Stephanie Kalu recorded a top-five finish for the Mustangs, crossing the finish line fourth in the 200-meter dash (24.00).

Freshman Anna Novosadova competed in the hurdles, taking 17th in the 400-meter (1:06.21) and 11th in the 100-meter (15.21).

Claire Trotter and Julie Vanderhout were the lone distance runners in action for SMU, as both ran the 1,500-meter.  Trotter finished 12th (18:22.67) and Vanderhout placed 14th (18:43.10).

On Friday at the 88th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, hosted by the University of Texas, Mustang sprinters competed in both the 100-meter dash and the 4x100 relay.

In 100-meter prelims, Kalu placed 22nd (11.90) and Shahira Ehiemua (12.02) finished 36th.  Ehiemua, Kalu, Rachel Scruggs and Craishia Washington ran the 4x100 relay for SMU, crossing the finish line 20th (46.60) in prelims.  The top nine finishers advanced to the finals in both events.

"This is exactly the kind of competition we needed this weekend," said Wollman.  "I am very proud of our performance."

SMU will again split its squad next weekend, as sprinters and field athletes head to the Baylor Invitational and distance runners will compete in the Stanford Invitational.  Both meets are on Friday, April 3.
