SMU Opens The American Championship On Sunday

DALLAS - The SMU women's golf team opens the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday. The three-day event, hosted by the league, is being held at Hammock Beach Resort and Golf Club in Palm Coast, Florida.
The Mustangs tee off on Sunday at 8 a.m. ET/7 a.m. CT with 18 holes on the Ocean Course. The field includes all nine conference schools that sponsor women's golf: UCF, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, USF, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa.
The American Championship Notes
▪ The 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship will be held at the Hammock Beach Resort and Golf Club.
▪ The three-day event will tee off at 8 a.m. ET/7 a.m. CT on the 6,225-yard, par-72, Ocean Course.

▪ This is the second year of The American Championship. Louisville (+51) won the inaugural event. Rounding out the leaderboard was UCF (+52), SMU (+64), Memphis (+75), USF (+80), Cincinnati (+86), Rutgers (+127) and Houston (DQ).
▪ Jenny Haglund is the defending individual medalist. She was two-over last year to win by five strokes over Louisville's Emily Haas (+7). Haglund carded rounds of 76, 71 and 71. UCF's Ashley Holder took third at eight-over.
SMU In The Rankings
SMU enters the American Athletic Conference Championship as No. 47 in the Golfstat Relative Rankings (April 15).
The rest of The American field rankings: No. 23 UCF, No. 24 Tulane, No. 49 Houston, No. 71 East Carolina, No. 73 Memphis, No. 74 USF, No. 100 Tulsa and No. 133 Cincinnati.
Last Time Out: SMU/DAC Invitational (April 10 & 11)
DALLAS - The SMU women's golf team concluded the 2015 SMU/DAC Invitational at the Dallas Athletic Club on April 11. The Mustangs finished the 54-hole event in 10th place.
Lindsey McCurdy had the best finish for SMU as she tied for 20th. She carded a 79 to bring her tournament score to 225, nine-over. Jenny Haglund and Jennifer Park both shot a 75 on the final round. Haglund (+17) tied for 47th while Park (+19) tied for 52nd. Evelyn Dole was the Mustangs' fourth score. She shot 78 on Saturday to up her tournament total to 234, 18-over. Alexandra Rossi closed the event with an 83 on her final round.
Folds Of Honor Military Tribute Program
The SMU women's golf team, in association with the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA), are participating in the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program by recognizing SMU student and U.S. Army veteran Sergeant Jason Owens in the spring semester.
The Mustangs will carry a special golf bag with Sgt. Owens' name stitched on the side for the rest of the semester. SMU will rotate who will carry the bag for each event. At the end of the season, the bag will be auctioned off with proceeds going towards the Folds of Honor organization.
Folds of Honor is a charitable organization which provides educational scholarships and other assistance for the children and spouses of military servicemen and women. The program has awarded nearly 5,500 educational scholarships.

Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland
Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland enters her fourth season on the Hilltop in 2014-15. Under Sutherland's instruction, the Mustangs have qualified for the NCAA Regionals each of the last two years. In the programs inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference, Sutherland coached the individual winner (Jenny Haglund) while coaching the team to a third-place finish.
