AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Stephanie Kalu and freshman Isabella Marten both competed on the opening day of the NCAA West Preliminary at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium on Thursday.
Kalu qualified for the 100-meter finals, earning an automatic bid by finishing second in her heat with a time of 11.38. The final round of heats are tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT with the top 12 finishers qualifying for the NCAA Championship. Kalu is also set to compete in 200-meter prelims tomorrow at 8 p.m. CT.
"Stephanie shot out of the blocks and had really good body language all day," said head coach Dave Wollman. "She is in top form."
Marten competed in the long jump, finishing 25th with a jump of 5.99 meters. The top 12 finishers earned a bid to NCAAs. Marten returns to action on Saturday with the triple jump, where she is seeded third overall.
"Isabella wanted to use the long jump to set up her triple and she accomplished this goal," said Wollman. "She is now comfortable on the same runway where she triples on Saturday."
