EUGENE, Ore. -- The SMU 4x100 relay team made history on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championship as the first ever 4x100 relay to compete at nationals in school history.
The team of Shahira Ehiemua, Stephanie Kalu, Rachel Scruggs and Craishia Washington finished 21st in semifinals (45.13). The top eight teams advanced to Saturday's final.
"I am so proud of these four girls," said head coach Cathy Casey. "They got out fast and really went for it. Each of them overcame so much this season and for them to be right in the mix with the best sprint programs in the country at the NCAAs speaks volumes about sprint coach Tony Miller. He really got them ready when it counted."
Junior Lucija Cvitanovic also competed on Friday, finishing 22nd in the javelin with a throw of 45.04 meters. This marks the third straight year Cvitanovic has competed in the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
"Lucija gave a solid performance and ended up ranked higher than she came in," said Casey.
Freshman Isabella Marten is the only remaining performer for SMU. She competes on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT/2 p.m. PT in the triple jump.
