CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (SMU) -The 23rd-ranked SMU men's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to Boston College on Friday evening at Newton Campus Lacrosse and Soccer Field. The win improved Boston College's record to 3-0, while the Mustangs fell to 2-1 in non-conference action.
SMU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Mauro Cichero scored off a 25 yard free kick after an Eagle foul. It was his first goal of the season. The Mustang's final goal came in the 62nd minute when Michael King got a foot on the ball after a free kick scramble around the Eagle's goal. Assists were credited to Jared Rice and Cichero.
"We played well tonight," Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. "We were very dangerous in the final third creating lots of chances but gave up some tough goals. This can be a cruel game because we deserved a better result tonight. We now prepare for the game on Sunday so we can take a positive result from this road trip."
The Ponies were able to hold Boston College scoreless until the 22nd minute when Atobra Ampadu attempted to cross the ball through Mustang goalkeeper Michael Nelson's hands and found the back of the net. Less than a minute later, Ampadu scored the Eagle's second goal off a shot from 30 yards out to put Boston College up 2-1 going into halftime.
The final two Boston College goals came in the second half when Zeiko Lewis slipped the ball past Nelson's hands after a long run from midfield. With three minutes remaining in the match, Simon Enstrom recorded the Eagle's insurance goal off a shot from 30 yards out.
The Mustangs outshot the Eagles, 17-12, with Cichero leading the way with four while Jacob Speed added three shots of his own.
In the net for SMU, goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded two saves while Boston College goalkeeper Cedric Saladin recorded one save.
Up next, the Mustangs head across town to Cambridge, Massachusetts to face Harvard on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at Soldiers Field Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.
