CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (SMU) - The 23rd-ranked SMU men's soccer team played Harvard to a 2-2 non-conference draw at Soldiers Field Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium Sunday afternoon. The tie improved the Mustangs to 2-1-1 on the season, while Harvard sits at 0-1-1.
SMU went up early in the match in the fifth minute after Mauro Cichero collected a rebound off a Caleb Smith shot and fired it passed Harvard goalkeeper, Evan Mendez. It was Cichero's second goal of the season, Smith's first assist.
It was not until the 42nd minute when Harvard forward Jake Freeman found the equalizer to tie the score 1-1 going into halftime.
It was The Crimson, though, who would find the net next with a tally in the 46th minute to put themselves up, 2-1. After a Harvard foul in the box in the 53rd minute, SMU senior John Lujano took advantage of the penalty kick and tied the score 2-2 to eventually push the match into overtime.
Through two overtime periods, the Mustangs got off two shots while Harvard attempted six, but neither team was able to find the eventual golden goal.
Harvard had the advantage in shots as they outshot the Mustangs, 23-14 overall. Smith and Cichero led SMU in shots with four a piece while A.J. Jeffries registered three shots of his own. Lujano, Bryce Clark and Emil Cuello accounted for the team's remaining shots on frame.
"It was a hard fought game against a resilient Harvard team," Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. "We played well at times and then lost our way at other times. We wanted more from the game but settle for the draw."
In the net for the Mustangs, goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded five saves of the seven shots on goal he faced.
"It was a good road trip and learning experience for this team who will surely grow from the challenging weekend," Hudson said. "We now get ready for a great stretch of home games."
Up next, the Mustangs return to the Hilltop as they host Portland on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. CT and No. 16 Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. For ticket information, go to http://www.smumustangs.com/tickets/.
