Meet The Freshmen: Robyn Maurer

The SMU women's soccer team welcomed 10 freshmen into the Mustang family, adding Brooke Kuempel,Katharine Herron, Hailey Bishop, Emily Cope, Avery Ortmann, Allie Thornton, Mary Meehan, Katina Tsapos, Jessica Cooley and Robyn Maurer. Maurer, from Fullerton, Calif., is next in our series introducing fans to these 10 new Mustangs.
Maurer has played in nine games this season, and has logged 126 minutes of action. In her first collegiate game against Northwestern State, she scored her first career goal. Weeks later against Abilene Christian, Maurer scored her second goal.
Prior to her arrival at SMU, Maurer played for the Blues Youth Soccer Club Corona and was a three-time letterwinner at Troy High School under Mike Selzer. With her soccer club, Maurer helped lead the team to the NPL finals in Indiana. During her tenure at Troy HS, she helped the team win league championships in 2014 and 2015, while earning varsity first-team all-league honors. She also won a letter in track.
Why I Chose SMU: I chose SMU because of the great coaching staff, small team size, great athletic facilities, the business program and the location of the school.
My favorite part of SMU/Dallas so far: My favorite part of SMU and Dallas are the people. Everyone I have met so far has been very warm and friendly, making it easy to meet new people.
Something I'd like for SMU fans to know about me: I have a twin sister and two older twin sisters who are sophomores in college. None of us went to the same high school.
My biggest strengths as a soccer player: Speed and endurance
Favorite/best moment in your soccer career: When my club team went to Indiana to play in the NPL finals. I didn't get to travel much since I didn't play for an ECNL team, so this was a pretty big deal to me and a very exciting opportunity.
How did it feel, and what was going through your mind when you scored your first collegiate? Leading up to season, I was somewhat hesitant of my ability to compete at such a high level. I didn't expect much to happen for me in that first game, but I went out there and did my best. Once I scored, I kind of started to relax and believe in myself a little more.
If not soccer, what sport/activity would you be doing instead? I honestly don't know. I have been playing since I was 4-years-old, so I can't picture my life without it.
What's one word you would use to describe this year's team? Underestimated. I think going into this season no one really expected much from us, but we have proved that we are a team to definitely look out for.
What's going to be one of the greatest strengths of this year's team? I think as a team we do a really good job at pushing each other to do our best, and we are always trying to keep a positive atmosphere.
How have your teammates and coaches helped you become acclimated to college? Everyone has been great. I could always go to them if I had a question or needed some advice about my classes or just college, in general.
Anticipated Major: Advertising with a minor in Sports management

What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time I like to watch Netflix, hang out with my teammates or talk with my family

Job I'd Like Outside of Soccer: I hope to work for a sporting goods company, specializing in advertising or sports marketing. I would also like to partner with a pro sports team or event, and manage their sponsorships.
