MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (SMU) – Competing as an individual, junior Gray Townsend fired a 1-under 139 to finish tied for third on the individual leaderboard, after day one of the Marquette Intercollegiate Sunday. In the team competition, the SMU men's golf team closed out day one action in fifth place, shooting a 573 (+13). The Mustangs posted an eight-over 288 in the opening round, before recording a 285 (+5) in the second round.

"The guys fought hard today and hung in there," SMU head coach Jason Enloe said. "Hopefully we can put together a good round tomorrow and come home with a solid finish. The guys are close to putting it all together."

Townsend opened the day with an even 70 in the opening round, before carding a 1-under 69 in the latter half of the day. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native is in a four-way tie for third, and only two strokes behind the tournament leader, Tyler Collier of UCLA.

In his first tournament since 2014, Maxime Blandin (142, +2) led the Mustang team effort and is tied for 12th. The senior opened the day with a two-over 72, before shooting even in the second round. He tallied five birdies between the two rounds.

Fellow senior Alex Higgs shot a 3-over 143 on the opening day to finish tied for 21st. After a three-over opening round, Higgs climbed four positions on the leaderboard with an even (70) second round. He has three birdies on the day.

Andrew Buchanan sits tied for 24th (144, +4). Buchanan opened the day with an even round, before shooting a 74 in the second 18 holes.

Freshman Daniel Connolly is tied for 29th (145, +5) after recording an opening round 73 and a 72 in round two. Connolly posted his first collegiate eagle on the par-5, 531-yard third hole.

Fellow newcomer Dillon Baxter is tied for 45th (150, +10). He opened the day with a 77, before rallying for a 73 in round two.

Northwestern leads the tournament (560, E), while UCLA (562, +2) and Mississippi (564, +4) round out the top three.

The Marquette Intercollegiate concludes Monday with the final round of action. The Mustangs will tee off at 8 a.m., and be paired with Liberty and host-school Marquette. Live results can be found at golfstat.com.
