Meet The Freshmen: Emily Cope

The SMU women's soccer team welcomed 10 freshmen into the Mustang family, adding Brooke Kuempel,Katharine Herron, Hailey Bishop, Emily Cope, Avery Ortmann, Allie Thornton, Mary Meehan, Katina Tsapos, Jessica Cooley and Robyn Maurer. Cope, from Vail, Colo., is next in our series introducing fans to these 10 new Mustangs.
Cope has seen action in 14 games for the Mustangs, and has logged 384 minutes. So far this season, Cope has recorded nine shot, with five on frame (55.6%). She recorded a season-high 53 minutes against BYU.
In high school, Cope played for the Colorado Rush 97/98 ECNL Girls team, while earning four letters at Battle Mountain High School under her father, David Cope. With the Colorado Rush, Cope helped the team to a third place finish in the 2015 ECNL North American League. During her tenure at Battle Mountain, Cope helped lead the team to three consecutive conference championships (2013-15), and to the state quarterfinal in 2015. She was a first-team All-State selection in 2015, and named a second team All-State selection in both 2013 and 2014. Outside of soccer, Cope was a three year letterwinner in Nordic Skiing and a one year letterwinner in Cross Country.
Why I Chose SMU: I love the team and the coaching staff. SMU is the perfect fit athletically and academically.

My biggest strengths as a soccer player: I can see the whole field and I have a good first touch.
Favorite/best moment in your soccer career: First college game!
If not soccer, what sport/activity would you be doing instead? I would be skiing!
What's one word you would use to describe this year's team? Eager
What's going to be one of the greatest strengths of this year's team? The team is very strong defensively and is able to transition quickly from offense to defense.
How have your teammates and coaches helped you become acclimated to college? They have been very welcoming! The team accepted us right away and the coaching staff provides positive feedback to help us become better players!
