DALLAS (SMU) –
Gray Townsend and
Daniel Connolly both shot even par (71) in the final round of the 2016 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate Tuesday. The SMU men's golf team finished 11th place, with a three-round 1108 (+43).
Connolly was SMU's best finisher, tying for 36th at 5-over-par (218). He carded six birdies through the three rounds, with three in the final round. Senior
Andrew Buchanan finished tied for 48th (+8, 221), shooting a 4-over 75 in round three.
Alex Higgs carded a 1-over 72 on the final day to climb five positions on the leaderboard and finish tied for 52nd. He finished the tournament with a 9-over 222.
Baylor won the tournament with a 31-under-par 1,034. American Athletic Conference opponent Houston claimed second place at 1-over par (1,066), while Michigan (+4, 1,069) rounded off the top three.
Higgs finished the fall season leading the team with a 72.33 stroke average. Freshman
Daniel Connolly was a close second behind Higgs, carding an average of 72.44. Townsend had the best Mustang finish, earning his first collegiate tournament win at the Marquette Intercollegiate. Connolly shot a team low round of 66.
The Mustangs will return to action in 2017, traveling to the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Feb. 6-7. The tournament is held at the TPC Sawgrass – Dye's Valley Course.
