MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (SMU) – Junior
Gray Townsend fired a 2-under 68 in the final round of the Marquette Intercollegiate Monday to earn his first collegiate tournament win, and record a career-low tournament score of 207. Townsend finished tied with Ryan Lumsden of Northwestern. In the team competition, the SMU men's golf team carded the tournament's low round, 7-under-par (273), to finish in fourth place (+6,846), and earn its first top five finish of the season. All four counting scorers finished even or sub-par.
As an individual, Townsend (-3, 70-69-68-207) carded four birdies on the day, all part of an unblemished front nine. The junior finished the two-day tournament with eight birdies.
Freshman
Daniel Connolly paced the Mustangs on the final day with a tournament-low, 4-under 66. The San Francisco native climbed 19 positions on the individual leaderboard to finish tied for 10th (+1, 211). Connolly rounded out the tournament with an eagle and ten birdies.
Alex Higgs also finished tied for 10th (+1, 221), using a 2-under 68 to ascend 11 positions on the leaderboard. Higgs finished with seven birdies, including four birdies in the last five holes of the front nine.
Andrew Buchanan used a 1-under 69 in the final round to move up four positions and finish tied for 20th. The Los Altos, Calif., native tallied nine birdies over the course of three rounds. Senior
Maxime Blandin shot even-par (70) to finish tied for 16th.
Dillon Baxter finished tied for 47th (+15, 225).
The SMU men's golf team returns to competitive action Oct. 24-25 in Dallas, at the Baylor-hosted Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, after hosting its traditional Payne Stewart Cup, a non-competitive fundraising tournament on Oct. 17.
