
SMU Heads To Connecticut To Close Out AAC Play

Series History…
This is the ninth meeting between SMU and UConn, dating back to 1983. The Mustangs trail in the series, 2-6-0 overall, with a 0-3 record when facing off in Storrs, Conn.
The Last Time They Met…
SMU beat UConn, 1-0, last season in Dallas, which was the first win over the Huskies since the inaugural meeting in 1983.
Mauro Cichero scored in the 52nd minute to lead SMU to the victory. Cichero received a cross from Jared Rice off a free kick and headed it in to the left corner of the goal.
Connecticut had a chance to score the equalizer in the 62nd minute off a penalty kick but missed high over the goal.
The Mustangs outshot Connecticut 17-11 overall, Cichero and Brenden Lee led the team with four shots apiece. Caleb Smith added two shots while Rice, Jordan Cano, Bryce Clark, Taylor Curtis, Idi Camara and Emil Cuello tallied one shot each to round out the total.
In the net, Michael Nelson recorded five saves.

The Mustangs enter the match 6-9-0 overall (2-4-0 American), with a 1-3-0 record on the road. Mauro Cichero, Brenden Lee and Garrett McLaughlin lead the Mustangs with three goals apiece. SMU fell to the USF Bulls, 1-0, last Saturday night in double overtime in Dallas.
Still scoreless after regulation and the first overtime, SMU and USF headed to double OT. In the 103rd minute USF found a loose ball in a scrum of players roughly three yards from the goal line, and managed to find the back of the net.
SMU outshot the Bulls, 12-11. Bryce Clark, Garrett McLaughlin and Brenden Lee took all three shots on goal for the Mustangs. Lee led the team with three total shots.
SMU's defense allowed only five shots on goal for the game. Michael Nelson tallied four saves in 103 minutes of play.
The match marked the third consecutive year SMU and USF went to double overtime.

The Mustangs are currently ranked seventh in the American Athletic Conference. SMU is tied for third in saves (56), fourth in shots (173), tied for sixth in goals (19), and eighth in assists (16). SMU is eighth in the AAC in points with 54, averaging 3.60 per game.
