Night Three Results | Championship Central
HOUSTON (SMU) -- Juniors Kirsty McLauchlan, Marne Erasmus and Tara-Lynn Nicholas all won individual events, while the Mustangs' 400-yard medley relay earned the victory, to hold the lead heading into the final day of the American Athletic Conference Championship at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center on the campus of the University of Houston.
SMU sits atop the team leaderboard with 454 points. Tulane is second with 440.5, and Houston rounds out the top three at 381. Cincinnati (351), East Carolina (342.5) and Connecticut (339) finish out the scoring.
McLauchlan dropped her time from preliminaries by over three seconds to 4:17.53 for the win in the 400-yard individual medley, moving up from the second seed following the morning session. With the win, McLauchlan swept the individual medley events and won her third straight at the 400 distance.
Fellow South Africa native Erasmus followed with a win of her own, breaking the pool record in the 100-yard butterfly with her third-consecutive win in the event at the Championship. Erasmus clocked in at 51.77, while her next closest competitor, Tulane's Kaitlin Simpson, finished in 54.10. Anna Cheesbrough also competed in the top final placing seventh at 54.72.
Seniors Tiffany Sudarma (10th), Eleonor Lindborg (14th) and junior Hannah Rogers (16th) scored for the Mustangs' in the event's Consolation Final.
Top-seed Nicholas was the only swimmer to post a sub-60 second time in the 100-yard breaststroke posting a 59.59 for the win.
The Mustangs made it four-for-four in relay action, adding the 400-yard medley relay to their list of medals. Anna Volchkov, Nicholas, Erasmus and Vicky Cunningham turned in a 3:36.41 to out-touch Cincinnati at 3:39.74.
In the final individual race, the 100-yard backstroke, Anna Volchkov picked up sixth-place points, and Lindborg was 16th in her second race of the evening.
Three Ponies placed in the top eight of the 200-yard freestyle, with Cunningham leading the way earning silver with a personal best 1:47.77. Adrienn Santa was fourth overall in the event and Maddie Hoch followed at sixth, while the Consolation Final saw Ursa Bezan claim the victory.
Saturday marks the final day of The American Championship and features the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay and platform. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. CT, with the opening round of diving to follow at 12:30 p.m. The two fastest heats of the 1,650 will kick off finals starting at 6 p.m., with slower heats taking place mid-day.
