DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs cruised to a 7-0 win over California Polytechnic on Sunday Afternoon, sweeping all six singles matches and winning two of the three doubles matches.

The Mustangs quickly took the doubles point, with Hunter and Yates Johnson sweeping Corey Pang and Ben Donovan 6-0 and Markus Kerner and Ronald Slobodchikov defeating Karl Enander and Dan Cardiff 6-2. Nate Lammons and Arkadijs Slobodkins were up 5-4 on their opponent before the doubles point was already decided.

"It was a very good match against a team that is ranked just behind us," said Head Coach Carl Neufeld. "We had a knocked out drag out match with them last year at their place, coming down to the last match and this year we did much better." "We didn't lose a set so it's an indication of how much we've improved."

On court six Yates won the first singles match, 6-1, 6-3 against Rafael Lenhard. Slobodchikov pushed the Mustangs lead to 3-0 after defeating Axel Damiens 6-3, 6-2. Hunter earned the decisive fourth point to give the Mustangs their fifth victory on the year winning 6-3, 6-3.

With the match already won, Lammons added to the Mustangs score winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 against Pang. Samm Butler followed up immediately with his singles win over Donovan 6-2, 6-3. Kerner defeated Josh Ortlip 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), giving SMU the final point of the match and its third sweep of the season.

"We didn't lose a set so it's an indication of how much we've improved from last year against these guys," said Neufeld. "I think the guys responded well after last week's match and came back playing some of our best tennis and that is very encouraging."

SMU will be back in action Thursday, when they face conference-foe Memphis. Doubles play is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
