Birmingham, Ala. (SMU) – The SMU women's track and field team had five student-athletes reach the podium at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday and Monday.
Junior Tochi Nlemchi won the shot put and freshman Latessa Johnson won the 200-meter dash with senior Lucija Cvitanovic earning a runner-up in the pentathlon, senior Craishia Washington finishing second in the 60-meter dash and senior Karoline Skatteboe earned the bronze medal in the 3000-meter run.
Nlemchi's personal best and winning 16.32-meter throw set a AAC Indoor Championship record to continue Nlemchi's first place streak where she has now won the last three shot put events she has competed in.
Johnson's 200-meter winning time of 23.48 was her personal best and another AAC Indoor Championship record for the Mustangs on the day. Johnson also competed in the 60-meter finals where Washington finished in second place with a time of 7.40 seconds
Cvitanovic competed in the pentathlon on Sunday and finished second with a final point total of 3808 just 21 points behind UConn's Saija Bikanova. Cvitanovic finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, tied for first in the high jump, came in third in the shot put, fifth in the long jump and won 800-meter run on her way to her runner-up finish.
Mustang distance runners Skatteboe and Holly Archer each earned fop five finishes in the mile run and 3000-meter run at Birmingham. Skatteboe finished in third place in the 3000-meters (9:44.29) and sixth in the mile behind Archer's fourth place finish, Archer also placed fifth in the 3000-meters.
SMU finished in fourth place overall with 69 total points, finishing behind team Champion UConn (110 points), Cincinnati (98.5 points), and UCF (91.5 points).
