Mustangs Finish Up Competition At Mt. SAC Relays

CERRITOS, Calif. (SMU) - The SMU track and field team ended their time in Cerritos California on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays. Most competitors for the Mustangs competed earlier in the with on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with junior thrower Tochi Nlemchi finishing off the week with the shot put invite on Saturday.

Freshman sprinter Latessa Johnson was once again a top performer for SMU as she won her section of the 200-meter dash but she also had the fastest time at the meet overall with 23.07 seconds. She also ran an 11.41 in the 100-meter dash and senior Craishia Washington who ran in both events was not far behind in her times of 11.54 in the 100 and 23.70 in the 200, which won her section.

Sophomore thrower Jacquetta Cannon won her flight of the shot put open on Friday putting up a 14.38-meter best throw. Nlemchi's 16.14-meter throw was good enough for 6th in the shot put invite on Saturday and she also threw the discus 44.43 meters to finish fifth in that event on Friday.

Senior multi-event athlete Lucija Cvitanovic competed in the heptathlon on Wednesday and Thursday to finish 13th with 5199 points. She won the javelin throw with a 46.96-meter throw, came in 15th in the shot put, 26th in the long jump, 13th in the high jump, 37th in the 100-meter hurdles, ninth in the 800-meter run, and 39th in the 200-meter dash.

Junior distance runner Holly Archer finished her second of the 800-meter run in second place with a time of 2:10.22 and finished 6th in her section of the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:23.05, with freshman Anneke Grogan finished 11th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:14.94. Seniors Michelle Gaye and Karoline Skatteboe each ran in the 5000-meter invite with Gaye finishing in 18th with a 16:45.17 and Skatteboe at 24th with a 17:15.35.

The Mt. SAC Relays is the last multi-day event for the Mustangs as they will compete two more times before defending the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. The SMU track and field team will head to Waco, Texas on April 23 for the Michael Johnson Invitational and San Marcos, Texas on April 30 for the Texas State Invitational.
