April 20, 2016 DALLAS (SMU) - SMU Athletics hosted the Lone Star State Compliance Summit from April 10-11, 2016, bringing together compliance administrators from every NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institution in Texas. Representatives from the NCAA and the Athlete Agents Division of the Texas Secretary of State's Office also attended.
The event is the first of its kind in the State of Texas and allowed all attendees to share best practices in the area of athletics compliance. The summit began with remarks from Dr. R. Gerald Turner, SMU President, and Rick Hart, SMU's Director of Athletics. The event included presentations and discussion about cost of attendance, recruiting visits, athlete agents, and rules education strategies. Attendees also participated in roundtable sessions about monitoring best practices related to game-day activities and recruiting events, as well as technology initiatives and facility usage by scholastic and non-scholastic teams.
"We are proud to have crafted this concept and taken the lead to develop the programming for the summit that brought all of these institutions together," said Kyle Conder, SMU Athletics' Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance. "Having every FBS institution in Texas attend this summit made for a meaningful event. The group was large enough to provide diverse perspective, but intimate enough to generate robust conversation and dialogue."
"This is another example of SMU Athletics' commitment to athletics compliance," said Hart. "We have cultivated a strong culture of compliance within our campus community and we are proud to be a leader in the area of athletics compliance."
