No. 12 Mustangs Fall to Michigan State In Season Opener

DALLAS (SMU) — The SMU Mustangs fell 2-1 against the Michigan State Spartans on Friday night at Westcott Field.

SMU took an early 1-0 lead when 2015 first team All-American junior Mauro Cichero converted a penalty kick in the second minute of the game. The Mustangs held the lead going into the half, but Michigan State would rally back in the second period.

MSU scored the equalizer in the 61st minute after Connor Corrigan's corner kick led to a scramble on the line and found Giuseppe Barone who managed to just barely tap it in. Ken Krolicki was credited for the assist. The Spartans' second goal came in the 74th minute when Ryan Sierakowski collected his own rebound as the ball bounced off of Michael Nelson and he found the back of the net from seven yards out.

Goalkeeper Michael Nelson tallied three saves in the net as the Mustangs held the Spartans to just five shots on goal.

"I think we can recover here," head coach Kevin Hudson said. "Tactically we'll make some changes. We will reorganize. I don't think we can massively change the group, but I think we'll change the effort. We'll change the commitment to take care of details in order to be better prepared for the next match."

SMU hosts Incarnate Word on Mon., Aug. 29 at Westcott Field.
