Against the Incarnate Word Cardinals, SMU is 2-0. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2015 where the Mustangs won 2-0.

Preseason Recognition…
The Mustangs were picked as the preseason favorite to repeat their American Athletic Conference championship. Mauro Cichero was named to the preseason MAC Hermann watch list. The junior was a semifinalist for the award last season and scored the first goal of the 2016 season against Micigan State in the home opener. Four Mustangs were named to the preseason All-Conference team. Cichero was unanimously voted preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Michael Nelson was named preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, his second consecutive season receiving the honor. Jordan Cano and Jared Rice were both named to the American preseason All-Conference team.

New Faces For A New Season…
The Mustangs return decorated senior and junior classes this season, while adding 10 freshmen to the 2016 roster led by Garrett McLaughlin. McLaughlin comes to the Hilltop as a two-time Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year (2015 & 2016). Patrick Michael Hillyard was named Texas 6A First-Team All-State Goalkeeper and MVP in 2016. Brandon Guhl joins the Mustangs as the top high school scorer in the state of Texas last season. Two representatives of the US Youth National team also join the squad in Dwight Williams Jr. and Eddie Munjoma.

Major Matches…
SMU will face several top tier clubs in the 2016 season, starting with an NCAA Sweet Sixteen rematch at No. 2 Akron on Mon., Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. CT. In conference play, the Mustangs take on No. 19 USF at Westcott Field on Sat., Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. CT. The match is set to broadcast on the American Digital Network. Other matches against teams receiving Top 25 votes include: American, Santa Clara, Tulsa, and Connecticut.

About the Cardinals…
The Incarnate Word Cardinals are led by senior forward Ben Conway and senior defender Joe Brown. Conway, a second-team 2015 All-Western Athletic Conference selection, played in all 16 of the Cardinals' games in 2015 and was second on the team for goals (7) and points (17). Brown was an intricate part of the back line that anchored the Cardinal defense last season, leading UIW to three shutouts. He started in all of the Cardinals' 16 games in 2015 and played the entire 90 minutes in 13 games, leading the team in minutes with 1,377.
