Series History…
Monday night's contest against the Zips presents a rematch of last season's NCAA Sweet 16 game in Akron, Ohio. The Zips barely defeated the Mustangs in a 2-1 decision, advancing to the Quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. All-time versus Akron, SMU is 1-3-0 overall.
The Last Time They Met…
The Mustangs barely dropped a 2-1 decision to then-No. 5 Akron in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last season at FirstEnergy Stadium Cub Cadet Field in Akron, Ohio.
The Mustangs' goal came in the 32nd minute after forcing the Zips to score an own goal off a Bryce Clark corner kick. Akron's first goal was in the 25th minute after Goncalo Soares received a cross from teammate Stuart Holthusen and punched it in from six yards out. The Zips' second goal came in the 43rd minute after an SMU own goal.
Goalkeeper Michael Nelson tallied nine saves in the net for SMU, tying his 2015 season high.
