SMU (16-2-1) heads to Washington, D.C., to face No. 14 seed Georgetown (14-3-2) in NCAA Men's Soccer Championship second round action Sunday at noon CT.
SMU, which finished the regular season ranked No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, is making its 31st appearance in the tournament and second in three seasons. Georgetown finished ranked No. 11 in the final poll and is making its sixth appearance under head coach Brian Wiese. The Hoyas have been to the tournament on seven previous occasions.
The Mustangs defeated Central Arkansas, 2-0, Thursday at home in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The win was head coach
Kevin Hudson's third NCAA Tournament victory and the program's 34th.
Georgetown won the BIG EAST Championship and earned a bye in the first round of the tournament. The Hoyas defeated Xavier, 2-1, in double overtime last weekend at Shaw Field to claim the conference tournament title and earn an automatic NCAA Tournament berth. It marked the second championship in three years for Georgetown as well as the second tournament championship in program history.
Top seed SMU defeated No. 2 seed UCF, 2-1, in overtime in the conference championship game to earn the American Athletic Conference automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. After a late own goal allowed the Knights to tie the game at 1-1,
Emil Cuello buried a 30-yard strike in the back of the net to claim the league championship for the Mustangs with an overtime golden goal.
The Mustangs became the first team to ever win both The American regular season and tournament titles in the same year. The win gave SMU its first conference tournament title since 2011 and the first under Hudson.
SMU is on an 11-match unbeaten streak and is perfect on the season at Westcott Field at 13-0. SMU has 12 shutouts on the season, while the defense has only allowed 10 goals.
