GREENWOOD, Ind. (SMU/CoSIDA) – Defenders
Jordan Cano and
Philip Ponder were selected to CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 First-Team, the organization announced Thursday.
First-Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be announced in December.
Cano holds 3.67 cumulative grade point average and will graduate in May with a bachelor of business administration in finance. The Frisco, Texas, native is also integral part to the Mustangs backline as the senior was named the 2017 American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The senior has started all 16 matches and tallied four assists while anchoring the No. 11 SMU backline that has allowed only nine goals. Cano has also been named the conference Defensive Player of the Week three times this season.
Ponder is in his second year on the Hilltop and carries a perfect 4.00 GPA while working towards a bachelor of business administration in management degree. The sophomore has started 15 matches for the Mustangs and scored his first career goal at Santa Clara to lift SMU to a 1-0 victory on Sept. 9.
The Mustangs host the American Men's Soccer Championship Friday at Westcott Field. UCF and Connecticut kick off Championship semifinals action at 4:30 p.m. in the first match of the day on Friday, while SMU faces Temple in the night cap at 7 p.m. Both semifinal matchups will air live on The American Digital Network. The semifinal winners will square off in the title game on Sunday (1 p.m., ESPNU) for the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
