The No. 8-seeded SMU equestrian team squares off against No. 9 seed TCU in the first round of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) National Championship Thursday at 9 a.m. CT at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas. SMU QUICK HITS:
  • The Mustangs are 7-6 overall, and finished atop of the United Equestrian Conference (UEC) for the second straight season with a 4-1 mark.
  • The Mustangs finished the regular-season tied for first, before earning runner-up honors at the UEC Championship.
  • Four Mustangs earned NCEA All-America Honors, the second most in a single-season. Vivian Yowan and Keagan Snively were named to NCEA All-America Equitation Over Fences and Reining Second Teams, while Sylvia de Toledo and Leina King earned Equitation Over Fences and Equitation on the Flat honorable mentions.
  • Yowan leads the team with a 17-7-2 record, while senior Sylvia de Toledo and sophomore Nora Gray both boast 16 wins

SMU's BY THE NUMBERS: In the English arena, the hunters are 8-3-2 overall, with 14 MOP honors, and have outscored opponents, 72-43. In equitation over fences, SMU has held opponents to 21 points (39-21), en route to an 10-3 mark. Freshman Vivian Yowan leads the jumpers with a 10-3 record, while Nora Gray and Sylvia de Toledo have nine and eight wins, respectively. Five Mustangs have four or more wins in equitation on the flat, led by de Toledo (8-2-3), Yowan (7-4-2) and Nora Gray (7-5-1). Leina King has six wins, with Haley Zimmerman at four.
 
In the Western arena, Keagan Snively leads the team with a 10-3 record, with senior Hannah McCain boasting an 8-5 mark. The western team has won 11 MOP honors, with Keagan Snively leading the team with five.
 
SCOUTING TCU: The Horned Frogs are 5-10,with five losses in their last six meets. TCU went 0-2 at the Big 12 Championship, a 10-9 loss to Baylor and an 11-8 loss to Oklahoma State. Two members of the TCU equestrian team were named to NCEA All-America teams, Kari Hancock earned first-team honors for Equitation on the Flat and Jayme Omand was named an Equitation Over Fences All-American honorable mention pick. Last season at the NCEA Championship, TCU made NCEA history by becoming the lowest seed ever to advance to the finals under the current format.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE HORNED FROGS: This is the 13th meeting all-time. The Mustangs and Horned Frogs are tied 6-6 all-time, after SMU won this year's lone meet, 9-8, in Fort Worth, Texas to open the season. TCU has won three of the last five meetings. 
 
IF ADVANCING, No. 1 BAYLOR: With a win against TCU, SMU will take on top-seeded Baylor on Friday in the second round of the NCEA Championship. This will be the 14th meeting all-time. SMU dropped both meets this season, the first a 13-6 decision on Oct. 29, before a tiebreaker loss, 8-8 (989-941-75), to then-No. 1 Baylor.
 
SMU AT THE NCEA CHAMPIONSHIP: SMU is making its sixth consecutive and 12th overall appearance at the National Championship. The Mustangs have advanced to the second round three of the last four years, including last year, when then-No. 10 seed SMU knocked off then-No. 7-seeded South Carolina, 10-6.

SMU VS. DELAWARE STATE
The SMU equestrian team finished as the United Equestrian Conference Championship runner-up after falling to Delaware State in a 6-6 (2557.75-2546.25) tiebreaker decision at the Quillen Arena on the Delaware State Fairgrounds. SMU jumped ahead early, edging Delaware State, 2-1, in Equitation Over Fences. Following a 162-162 tie by Sylvia de Toledo, Nora Gray opened scoring for the Mustangs with a 173-163 win over Rachel Dantley. Vivian Yowan secured the discipline win by rolling past Hayley Anderson, 166-149. The Mustangs took a 4-1 lead after a 2-0 win in Reining. Keagan Snively posted a 149-144.5 win over Shelbe Jarrett, before Jaclyn White bested Elizabeth Koons, 147.5-146.5. Madison Steed and Olivia Pakula each recorded ties, finishing 145-145 and 141.5-141.5, respectively. In horsemanship, Ashley Mauney used a 149.5 to knock off Blayne Bell, 149.5-149. In Equitation on the Flat, Gray won her second point of the day, 140-109. Yowan and Snively were named the UEC Championship Most Outstanding Players (MOPs), following their performances during the two-day tournament. Yowan was named the Equitation Over Fences MOP, while Snively earned the Reining MOP.
 
SMU VS. UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AT MARTIN
The No. 2-seeded SMU equestrian team advanced to the final round of the United Equestrian Conference Championship after defeating No. 3-seeded University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM), 11-3, at the Quillen Arena on the Delaware State Fairgrounds Friday. With a 4-3 lead, SMU (7-5) won the last seven points of the meet with scores from both Horsemanship and Equitation on the Flat to seal the victory. SMU posted a clean-sweep in Horsemanship to seal the victory. Senior Morgan Redwine claimed the first point of the discipline with a 146-142.5 victory over Jade Bleskey, before Ashley Mauney knocked off Brittany Woodard, 143.5-141.5. Michaela Dinger recorded a 139 to best Liana Nowak, 139-137.5, before Hannah McCain closed out the event with a 129.5-128.5 edge over Bobbie Piddock. With an 8-3 lead over the Skyhawks, the Mustangs won Equitation on the Flat, 3-0, to close the meet. Sylvia de Toledo topped Randi LaChance, 124-121, to open the event. Following a 126-126 tie by Vivian Yowan, Leina King improved to 6-1 on the season with a 133-124 win over Claire Ottinger. Nora Gray knocked off Monika Zoromski, 123-109, to round off the day. Earlier in the day, SMU jumped out to a 3-1 lead following Equitation Over Fences. Gray bested Zoromski, 151-141, before Yowan posted a 163-131 rout over Ally Scholfield. de Toledo secured the discipline win, besting LaChance, 122-60. Tennessee-Martin edged SMU, 2-1, in reining. Keagan Snively defeated Madeline Williams, 143.5-142.5, to earn SMU's lone point.
 
FOUR EARN NCEA ALL-AMERICA HONORS: Four Mustangs earned NCEA All-America Honors, the second most in a single-season. Vivian Yowan and Keagan Snively were named to NCEA All-America Equitation Over Fences and Reining Second Teams, while Sylvia de Toledo and Leina King earned Equitation Over Fences and Equitation on the Flat honorable mentions. de Toledo has five career All-America honors, four Over Fences and one in Equitation On The Flat This is the first All-America honor for Yowan, Snively and King.
 
SMU EARNS HIGHEST RANKING IN PROGRAM HISTORY: The SMU equestrian team earned its highest ranking in program history, being ranked No. 4 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) poll, after beating then-No. 9 Oklahoma State. SMU surpassed its previous high of fifth after wins at then-No. 3 TCU and most recently then-No. 9 Oklahoma State. SMU's previous high ranking of fifth came in November of 2014, after the Mustangs topped three consecutive top-10 teams, including No. 1 Georgia, No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 10 New Mexico State.
 
NCEA RIDER OF THE MONTH HONORS: Freshman Vivian Yowan and junior Keagan Snively were named the February NCEA National Riders of the Month. Yowan snagged the EquiFit Equitation Over Fences Rider of the Month honor, while Snively earned the Shorty's Reining Rider of the Month. Both Yowan and Snively went 5-0, with two MOPs in their respective disciplines. The national recognition is the first for both riders, and the first for any Mustang this season.
 
UEC RIDER OF THE MONTH: SMU has snagged five UEC Rider of the Month awards this season. Vivian Yowan has won second consecutive equitation over fences award (Nov., Feb.), while Snively picked up the February reining rider of the Month award for her second career honor. In November, Michaela Dinger was the Horsemanship Rider of the Month. In October, Sylvia de Toledo was named the equitation over fences Rider of the Month.
 
SMU CAREER WINS LEADERS: Senior Sylvia de Toledo became SMU's all-time career wins leader after a 79-77 Equitation Over Fences win over TCU's Patty Gill on Sept. 23, 2016. de Toledo enters her final week of competition as a Mustang with 68 career victories. Sophomore Nora Gray moves to fifth on SMU's wins list following four wins at the United Equestrian Conference Championships.

WIN 'EM BOTH: Sophomore Nora Gray won both of the hunt seat MOP honors against Fresno State on Feb. 10, to become the third rider in SMU history to manage the feat. Emma Roberts (2011-14) managed the achievement as a freshman against top-ranked Georgia on March 9, 2012, before Schaefer Raposa earned both honors last season against TCU on Sept. 24, 2015.
 
ROLLING IN MOPS: Entering the NCEA Championship, SMU has won 25 Most Outstand Player honors, 14 in the hunt seat arena and 11 in the western ring. Keagan Snively and Vivian Yowan lead the Mustangs with five MOPs apiece, while Nora Gray boasts four. Sylvia de Toledo and Madison Steed each have two, while seven different Mustangs have one.
 
HOME SWEET HOME: The SMU equestrian team has moved to the Dallas Equestrian Center (DEC), which will serve as its official stables and training facility. SMU finished its home slate with a 4-1 record at the DEC.
 
ACADEMIC SUCCESS: Last season, 14 members of the SMU equestrian team earned NCEA academic honors. Six riders earned spots on the Beval Saddlery Academic All-America team, while 13 were named to the La Hacienda Academic Honor Roll. Schaefer Raposa, Sylvia de Toledo and Keagan Snively achieved first-team status, which is awarded to student-athletes who competed in a minimum of 70 percent of meets during the 2015-16 season, and earned a cumulative 3.5 GPA while maintaining full-time enrollment in the 2015 spring and fall semesters. de Toledo achieved a team-high 3.97 GPA, Raposa boasted a 3.70 and Snively maintained a 3.54.
 
2015-16 SEASON RECAP: The Mustangs posted a 7-10 record and finished tied for first (4-2) in the United Equestrian Conference. SMU advanced to the NCEA National Championship quarterfinals after a 10-6 upset over the defending-champion and No. 7 seed South Carolina. During the regular season, SMU topped three ranked-opponents: No. 6 South Carolina, No. 7 Fresno State and No. 3 Texas A&M. SMU was ranked as high as No. 6, and spent 10 of 13 weeks in the polls.
