MESA, Arizona (SMU) – Ten Mustangs advanced to evening finals during competition at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Mesa this past weekend. Overall, SMU swimmers made five appearances in Championship or Consolation Finals that included Olympians, NCAA Champions and collegiate swimmers.
Jonathan Gomez had the highest finish of any Mustang at the event, placing third in the Championship Final of the 200-meter butterfly in a time of 1:59.40. He also advanced to the C Final of the 100 distance, clocking a time of 56.22 for fourth.
Ronen Faur also had a standout performance in the 200-meter breaststroke, qualifying for the Consolation Final. Faur covered the distance in 2:17.55 for fifth. The 100-meter breaststroke saw him finish second in the C Final at 1:04.81.
Lucas Schenke was the third Mustang man to advance to finals, placing eighth and third in the C Finals of the 400 free and 200 free, respectively.
On the women's side,
Anna Cheesbrough led the Ponies finishing seventh (2:18.43) in the 200-meter butterfly Championship Final. She, along with
Adrienn Santa and
Erin Trahan, also advanced to finals in the 100-meter butterfly. Cheesbrough was the highest finisher at fourth in the C Final, with Santa coming in next at eight, while Trahan was third in the D Final. Trahan also placed third in the 200 fly C Final, while Santa was sixth in the 200 IM B Final and sixth in the 50 free D Final.
Mustang alum Isabella Arcila won the 100-meter backstroke Consolation Final, touching in a time of 1:03.17, an event which also featured
Agata Magner, who was 8th in the D Final. Magner completed competition in the 200 back C Final, finishing sixth.
In sprint freestyle events, Arcila advanced to both C Finals, finishing second in the 100 free at 56.98 and fourth in the 50 free at 26.11.
Hannah Rogers and
El Yellin also represented the Mustangs in freestyle finals, as Rogers took on the field in the 50 free C Final, placing eighth, and Yellin swam distance events finishing seventh in the 400 free D Final and 22nd in the 800 free.
