AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) – The SMU women's track and field team wrapped up the outdoor season with two Mustangs competing on the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round Saturday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Hannah Miller was last Mustang to compete as she finished her stellar freshman campaign with a 14th place finish in the semifinals of the 5,000-meters. Miller placed eighth in her heat with a time of 16 minutes, 44.91 seconds after running with the lead pack most of the race. The lead pack started to break away with two laps to go and Miller remained in contention, but fell off the back of the pack with a lap to go. The Invercargill, New Zealand, native was just two spots away from punching a ticket to Eugene.
Miller is a five-time (three indoor and two outdoor) all-conference honoree and was also The American runner-up in cross country in the fall. She claimed three medals at the indoor championship earning silver in the 5K, bronze in the 3K and silver as a member of the distance medley relay. At the outdoor championship, Miller picked up two bronze medals in the 5K and in her first ever 10K.
Latessa Johnson was the first Mustang on the track as she closed out her sophomore campaign after running 23.33 (+2.7 mps) seconds in quarterfinal of the 200-meter dash. Johnson finished sixth in her heat and 17th overall.
Johnson redshirted the indoor season, but was impressive during outdoors as she claimed her second career American Athletic Conference 200m title (2016 200m indoor champion) this season with a season best time of 23.10. She still holds the school and conference record in the event at 22.80, which was set at the NCAA preliminary round last year.
The top-12 qualifiers in each event out of both preliminary rounds will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon.
