DALLAS (SMU) – Among some of the best collegiate golfers in the country, freshman
McClure Meissner finished sixth overall at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
In his first collegiate tournament, the San Antonio, Texas, native made a statement by finishing 5-under-par (67-71-70—208) and finishing with 15 birdies, the most among the strong field. On the final day of play, the rookie paced the Mustangs with a 1-under-par 70 to finish sixth overall. He finished just one stroke behind the three-way tie for third and five strokes out of first place. Meissner opened on the back half where he birdied four of the nine holes to take a 2-under card into the turn. After three bogies, he recorded birdies on holes No. 7 and No. 8 to finish the round under-par.
Graduate transfer
Clancy Waugh posted a 1-over-par 72 on day three to wrap up the event. In his first event as a Mustang, Waugh (+4, 72-73-72—217) posted 11 birdies, and finished tied for 36th.
As an individual,
Jackson Markham posted a 73 on the day to climb three spots on the leaderboard and finish tied for 49th. He finished with a three-day total of 220 (+7, 70-77-73).
Piran Adi (+9, 71-74-77—222) finished tied for 55th after a third-round 77.
Gray Townsend (+13, 76-71-79—226),
Henrik Olsson (+13, 77-73-76—226) and
Dillon Baxter (+13, 74-75-77—226) all finished tied for 63rd.
Daniel Connolly (+14, 78-71-78—227) finished tied for 66th, while
Ben Baxter (+16, 72-78-79—229) finished 72nd.
The SMU men's golf team finished in 12th place after carding a three-round 874 (+22, 292-286-296).The Ponies carded a 296 in round three.
Florida won the event at 17-under-par (835). Auburn and Texas Tech finished tied for second at 7-under-par (845).
Up next, SMU heads to the Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas, for the Bayou City Collegiate Classic. The two-day event runs from Oct. 9 – Oct. 10.
