Men’s Tennis to Face UT Permian Basin, Midwestern State in Doubleheader

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU continues its spring season by returning home to take on UT Permian Basin (0-1) and Midwestern State (0-0) in a doubleheader at the SMU Tennis Complex on Sunday, Feb. 3. The Mustangs take on UTPB at 9:30 a.m. and MSU at 3 p.m.
The Mustangs return to the court after going 0-2 last weekend at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles, California. It was SMU's second-consecutive invitation to the tournament, but ultimately SMU fell 4-0 to both UC Santa Barbara (1-1) and Indiana (3-2).
SCOUTING UT PERMIAN BASIN
The Falcons enter Sunday's match with a 0-1 record, with the sole loss coming at No. 24 Texas Tech. In 2017, the Falcons held a 6-9 record. Raul Stevens is the only UTPB player nationally-ranked in the Oracle/ITA rankings, coming in at No. 11 in Division II Singles.
SCOUTING MIDWESTERN STATE
Midwestern State is tied for the No. 23-ranked Division II team in the Oracle/ITA rankings. MSU returns five players from last year's squad that advanced to the NCAA Regionals. MSU opens up its season on Feb. 2 against Seminole State before heading to Dallas. The team lost 7-0 against No. 24 Texas Tech in a preseason exhibition.

The Mustangs hold winning all-time records against both UT Permian Basin and Midwestern State. Against the Falcons, SMU is 2-0 with two sweeps at home. The last win came in March 2016 when SMU won 4-0. Against the Mustangs of Midwestern State, SMU holds at 2-0 record. The two schools haven't met since 1985, when SMU swept Midwestern State 9-0.

The SMU men's tennis team (1-4) fell to Indiana (3-2) in Saturday's consolation match hosted by USC at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles, California.
SMU was selected to compete in this year's ITA Kick-Off Weekend in June for the second consecutive year.
The Mustangs lost the doubles point in two matches, suspending No. 1 doubles. Charles Nettlefold and Roberto Rosales were defeated 6-4 by Antonio Cembellin and Afonso Salgado. Indiana's Payam Ahmadi and Bennett Crane sealed the point with a 6-1 win over Eladio Fabregas and Gardiner Perotti.
No. 4 singles was retired early, giving Crane a quick win over Fabregas. The Hoosiers followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory by Cembellin over Tomas Vaise and a 6-2, 6-1 win by Zac Brodney over Gardiner Perotti to clinch the match.
LOOKING AHEAD:
SMU will continue its current homestand with matches against Arkansas on Friday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. and cross-town rival TCU on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 4:30 p.m.
