Box Score DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men's tennis team lost 6-1 to Arkansas in a match filled with tiebreaks on Friday at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs clinched the doubles point but couldn't close out any singles matches to keep the match within reach.
In doubles,
Charles Nettlefold and
Roberto Rosales paired for a 6-2 win over Branch Terrell and Alex Reco of Arkansas, while
Jan-Simon Vrbsky/
Tomas Vaise defeated Adam Sanjurjo/Oscar Mesquida, 6-4.
The Mustangs couldn't maintain momentum in singles play. Vrbsky fell to No. 59 Jose Salazar (6-3, 6-3) to even the score at 1-1. On court two,
Charles Nettlefold dropped straight sets to Adam Sanjurjo, 6-4, 7-5. Oscar Mesquida padded the Razorbacks' lead with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Rosales.
Vaise,
Eladio Fabregas and
Gardiner Perotti each took the first set, but ultimately fell to their opponents. Vaise fell to Josh Howard-Tripp 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Fabregas battled to a 7-6 (3) first set win, but dropped the next two sets 6-2, 6-2. Perotti forced a marathon tiebreak in the first set, eventually winning 7-6 (8) over Alex Reco, but dropped the next set 6-3. The final set was played as a match tiebreak with Perotti losing 1-0 (4).
The Mustangs take only a short rest before welcoming No. 18 TCU on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. for a crow-town rivalry match.
