INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (SMU) – Despite freshman
Tomas Vaise's straight set victory over No. 116-ranked Makey Rakotomalala, the Mustangs fell, 4-2, to No. 26 Arizona State in the opening match of the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge by Oracle on Friday.
Vaise improves to 8-4 for dual match season, while the Mustangs drop to 7-10.
The Mustangs secured the doubles point to take an early lead.
Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Vaise partnered for a 6-3 win at the top spot, followed by a 6-4 win by
Charles Nettlefold and
Roberto Rosales at No. 3.
In singles play, Vaise led the way for the Mustangs by winning his first set against No. 116 Rakotomalala, 6-3. The two battled through the second set, but Vaise emerged with a 6-4 win to add a point for SMU. The victory is the first for the Mustangs against a ranked opponent this season.
Unfortunately the Mustangs couldn't overpower the top-seeded Sun Devils, who claimed wins on courts one, three, four and five to clinch the match.
SMU is slated to play BYU tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
