DALLAS (SMU) – Freshmen
Jan-Simon Vrbsky and
Tomas Vaise picked up points at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but the Mustangs could not overpower UTSA in Saturday's 4-2 loss at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs fall to 7-12 for the season while UTSA improves to 10-9.
SMU dropped the doubles point for the first time in the last three matches, losing on courts two and three. Vaise and Vrbsky were battling in a 4-4 tie when the Roadrunners clinched the doubles point on the other courts.
The Roadrunners continued momentum in singles play, gaining a 3-0 lead over SMU with wins at No. 3 and No. 4, but the Mustangs refused to go easily. Vrbsky picked up his ninth win of the season with a 7-5, 6-4 win over UTSA's Gabriel Bugiga at No. 2. Vaise added a point with his 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory on court one over Kai Breitbach.
The final point was clinched on court five, with Joao Ceolin's 7-5, 7-5 win over
Roberto Rosales.
SMU returns to Turpin Stadium on Tuesday, March 27, to face No. 32 Tulane at 5 p.m.
