SMU Defense Shines In Loss To No. 15 Creighton

Mustangs posted 14 blocks; Adams scored 17 kills

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team was edged out in a tightly contested, three-set match against No. 15 Creighton (4-2) in the final match of the DoubleTree Classic in Moody Coliseum Saturday (25-27, 24-26, 21-25).

Senior Brittany Adams led all attackers with 17 kills, earning all-tournament honors with 41 kills and a .252 attack percentage on the weekend. She averaged 4.1 kills per set, and had 32 digs, including 10 against Creighton for her first double-double of the season.

The Mustangs (1-4) had a serve for the set in both the first and second. Leading 25-24 after battling back from a 24-21 deficit, the SMU served landed just beyond the end line. The Bluejays scored with a kill and a block on the next two points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

SMU erased another three-point deficit in the second set, trailing 17-14, before a 4-0 run that included a pair of blocks gave the Mustangs an 18-17 advantage. Creighton was unable to regain the lead until three straight points gave the Bluejays a 26-24 victory.

The Mustangs overcame an early deficit, which was extended to eight points midway through the final set. Trailing 16-8, SMU rallied back to cut the lead to three, 22-19, attempting to avoid the sweep. Creighton scored three of the next five points for the win.

Montana Watts had 10 digs in the match, finishing the weekend with 47 to average 4.7 per set and earn Best Libero of the tournament. It was at the net where the SMU defense showed the most improvement. The Mustangs recorded 14 blocks to Creighton's seven. Meryn Kennedy had 10 blocks, including three solo blocks, and Lexi Nordmann posted four.

SMU begins the Fight in the Fort against TCU Thursday night in Fort Worth. The Mustangs also face Montana State and Louisiana in the tournament.
