BOX SCORE
DALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs used a pair of second-half goals to top the Temple Owls, 2-0, in The American opener Thursday night from Westcott Field.
The game was delayed for over an hour and a half as a storm rolled through the Hilltop. Play finally began on a damp field around 8:35.
SMU controlled play in the first half but were unable to break the seal. They generated near chances including near misses from Ale Winn and Hannah Fleet.
The Mustangs came out in the second half looking for the tie-breaker and found it in the 59th minute. After a shot from close range by Allie Thornton was blocked outside the box, freshman Celiana Torres collected the rebound and fired one from long range. Torres' shot beat the keeper for her fourth goal of the season.
Thornton gave the Mustangs an insurance goal in the 75th as she hit a low lining kick perfectly in the corner of net. Torres and Hannah Allred added assists on the tally.
Catie Brown held strong in goal all night for the second Mustang shutout of the season. The senior keeper has spent 340 minutes in net since last conceding a goal.
The Mustangs improved to 6-2-1 on the season, the best start since 2006. SMU has not been beaten in any of their last five conference openers. Temple fell to 4-6-0 through 10 games.
Next up, the Mustangs welcome the UCONN Huskies to Westcott Field on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
