DALLAS (SMU) - The Mustangs kickoff the 2019 season on Thursday with a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M. The matches are set for 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. from the SMU Tennis complex.
SMU returns seven from the 2018 team including, Sophomore
Tomas Vaise and
Jan-Simon Vrbsky led the team with 10 wins each in singles last season and combined for an 11-9 record in doubles play. Vrbsky and Vaise went 5-5 together over the course of the fall season. The pair also split most of the time at line one last season and combined to go 11-10 from the first line.Â
Along with Vrbsky and Vaise, the young Mustangs roster includes six total sophomores, including returnees
Michael Smith,
Roberto Rosales,
Gardiner Perotti and
Blaise Fagan.
Junior
Carles Sarrio begins his first season with the Mustangs after transferring from Auburn. The Valencia, Spain native finished the fall season with an 11-5 record and was ranked No. 51 in the final ITA rankings of the fall.Â
Rory Samuels is the Mustang's lone senior and one of two upperclassman along with Sarrio.
First-year head coach
Grant Chen's Mustang roster features five freshman, three of whom played with the Mustangs in the fall,
Jack Kite,
Avery Pennywell and
Andrew Buhelos. The Mustangs roster also include two Spring additions to the squad.
Eddie Ross and
Huntley Allen, both from South Carolina, have joined the team for this semester to round out the Mustang lineup.
Prairie View and SMU faced off last season as well in a doubleheader. The Mustangs won the first match 5-2 before coasting to a 7-0 victory in the concluding match. SMU and Prairie View have met 14 previous times with the Mustangs winning each matchup. The doubleheader will be one of six on the Mustangs slate this season, including five at home.
After the season opener, the Mustangs will travel to Austin for a road test on Sunday against the eighth-ranked Longhorns.
