HOUSTON (SMU) – Mustang Track and Field travels south to compete at the the Houston Invitational from the Yeoman Fieldhouse Jan. 25-26.

The events begin at 10 a.m. on Friday and run through Saturday evening. This will be the second collegiate meet hosted by the University of Houston from their new banked track inside Yeoman Fieldhouse. Running events will begin at 4 p.m.

At the MLK Jr. Invite last weekend, the Mustangs posted four top times in the conference including two by Junior Chelsea Francis.

Francis earned American Conference Track Athlete of the week after her performance in New Mexico. She ran a 23.63 in the 200 meter, the fastest time in the conference before following it up with a 7.25 in the final of the 60m, also tops in the conference and a new program record.

Freshman Chika Iwuamadi ran a 53.61 in the 400, another program record and a conference topping time. Nicole Iloyana recorded a distance of 12.84 in the triple jump to win the event and also reach the top mark in the conference.

At last season's Houston Invite, Francis took home first in the 60m, Svenja Ojstersek won the 3000m, and the Mustangs were first in the distance medley.

The Mustangs moved up four spots to No. 99 in the USTCCCA rankings after competition in New Mexico. They are ranked 12th in the South Central, a region that currently has the top three teams in the nation.

Along with the Cougars and Mustangs, the weekend event will feature teams from Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Prairie View A&M, Rice, Sam Houston State, South Florida, Stephen F. Austin, Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Southern, Texas Wesleyan, UT Rio Grande Valley and UTSA.
