The Mustangs are set to host an NCAA Championship Round of 16 match on Saturday night when No. 9 seed UCF comes to Dallas with an Elite Eight berth on the line. The game will be played at Westcott Field at 7:30 p.m. and is a rematch of the AAC Championship game that SMU won 1-0 on November 16 in Orlando.Â
The Mustangs are seeking their first Elite Eight appearance since 2010.Â
Per NCAA policy, this is a ticketed event. Tickets can be purchased for $10 (adults) or $5 (children) either online or at the ticket window located on the first floor of the Loyd All Sports Center starting at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night. Due to the football game being played at SMU on Saturday afternoon, parking will be open in all SMU garages starting at halftime of the football game. Fans are encouraged to arrive earlier than usual due to expected traffic and parking congestion.Â
The Mustangs are in their third Sweet 16 in five years after beating Coastal Carolina 1-0 in 2OT in the NCAA Second Round. No. 8 seeded SMU now turns its focus to an AAC title rematch with No. 9 seeded UCF with an Elite Eight berth on the line. The Mustangs and Knights played twice earlier this year, with SMU drawing in the regular season and then winning 1-0 in the AAC title match on Nov. 16.
In their last time on the pitch, SMU knocked off the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Championship. Garrett McLaughlin scored the game's only goal in the 108th minute to keep SMU's championship dreams alive. It was McLaughlin's 16th goal of the season and 7th game-winner, and Grant Makela earned his 11th win in net and 7th clean sheet in the win.
The Mustangs have had an historic season, scoring the most goals (59) of any SMU team since 2001 (61), and are tied for the 5th most wins in school history with 17. SMU is the hottest team in the country, possessing the longest active winning streak in soccer at seven straight wins. The Mustangs are 7-0-1 vs. teams that made the 2018 NCAA Championship.Â
The Mustangs are ranked 5th in the country by the United Soccer Coaches and claimed the No. 3 spot in both the Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News polls. They are the No. 3 team in the NCAA RPI and are the No. 8 national seed in this year's NCAA Championship, their first national seed since 2011.
SMU is 36-25-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs have made runs to the College Cup in 2000 and 2005, appeared in 12 Elite Eights and 24 Sweet 16s. The Mustangs haven't lost at home in the NCAA Tournament since 2011.Â
The Knights are a familiar foe for the Mustangs, as the two sides have played twice already this season. UCF is 15-2-2 on the season, and one of their losses and one of their draws came at the hands of SMU. They're the No. 9 national seed but ranked 8th in the polls, and 5th in RPI. SMU and UCF have met 17 times all-time and the Mustangs own a 8-4-5 series lead.Â
The winner of Saturday's match will play the winner of No. 1 Virginia and No. 16 St. John's, which will be played on Saturday at 6 p.m. If Virginia wins, then the winner of the SMU match will travel to Charlottesville with a spot in the College Cup awaiting the winner the following weekend. If St. John's defeats Virginia then the winner of the SMU match would host an Elite Eight game at their campus site.Â
