BOX SCORE  SEASON STATS

DALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs suffered a tough loss, 4-3, to the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon from the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Roadrunners were the first one the board as they took the doubles point over the Mustangs. UTSA started by winning on No. 3 over Avery Pennywell and Blaise Fagan, 6-1. After Carles Sarrio and Roberto Rosales won, 6-3, on No. 2, it came down to the action on No. 1. Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Tomas Vaise finished on the wrong end of a 6-4 decision putting UTSA on the board first.

The Mustangs won the first point of singles thanks to the play of Carles Sarrio. On court No. 1, Sarrio cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 over No. 103 Kai Breitbach for his seventh win of the dual season. It was Carles' second straight set win over a nationally ranked player this spring.  SMU is now 10-2 in 2019 from line one.

UTSA handled courts five and six in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Andrew Buhelos on No. 6 and a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Michael Smith on No. 5. The wins put the Roadrunners one point away from a clinch.

Vaise rebounded after dropping the middle set to take his match on No. 4, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 leaving the Mustangs in need of two more wins. Vrbsky kept the Mustangs alive as he earned the break SMU had to have and forced a third set.

Over on No. 3, Roberto Rosales was in the midst of a critical third set but couldn't get the deciding point that would have broken UTSA at 5-5 and lost the match (1-6, 6-3, 6-4), clinching the win for UTSA. Vrbsky would go on to win his third set to put the final score at 4-3, the second 4-3 loss of the season for SMU.

The Mustangs fall to 7-5 on the season while UTSA improved to 6-1 for the 2019 campaign with their only loss coming at the hands of No. 8 Texas.

SMU is back in action on Friday to wrap up their six-game homestand. The Mustangs face Oklahoma Baptist at 11 am before taking on Abilene Christian in the evening match at 5 pm.
