SMU Set For Mustangs In Manhattan Saturday Doubleheader

SMU Men's Tennis heads to New York City for their "Mustangs In Manhattan" trip where they will face No. 9 Columbia and Wagner on Saturday.

SMU will start Saturday with a matchup against the No. 9 Lions of Columbia on their home surface at 10 am CT/ 11 am ET. After, the Mustangs will make the trek to the Bronx for a neutral site matchup against the Seahawks of Wagner. The match is slated for 3 pm CT/ 4 pm ET.

The Mustangs head to New York with an 8-6 record on the season. Last weekend, the Mustangs split a doubleheader, first beating Oklahoma Baptist before losing in a tight match to Abilene Christian.

Apart from the on-court action, the Mustangs will get to see some of the top tennis destination including the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, the site of the U.S. Open. Their two matches will take place at the Columbia's Dick Savitt Tennis Center and Cary Leeds Center for Tennis and Learning. SMU will also get a chance to hit at the US Open Indoor Courts and on Randall's Island.

The Matchup against Columbia will be available to watch on ESPN3/WatchESPN App.

-Junior Carles Sarrio is ranked No. 50 in the ITA singles ranking. Sarrio was ranked as high as No. 47 earlier in the season. The junior boasts an 8-3 record during the spring campaign and has two ranked wins. Sarrio first took out Christian Sigsgaard of Texas, who was ranked fourth in the country, while also knocking off No. 103 Kai Breitbach of UTSA.

-The Mustangs have an 11-3 record from line one singles this season. Sarrio has an 8-3 record from the top spot while Jan-Simon Vrbsky is undefeated in one match and Roberto Rosales unbeaten in two matches.

-Vrbsky is tied with Sarrio for the team lead in wins. The sophomore has an 8-4 record while playing at the first four lines. His most time has come at line two where he has a 5-3 record.

-The duo of Vrsbky and Tomas Vaise lead the Mustangs with five doubles wins on the season. SMU has a 8-3 record at line one.

-In doubles, the Mustangs started the season by winning eight of the first 10 doubles points but have lost four in a row. In those four losses the Mustangs have been narrowly defeated with the matches coming down to the final court.

-SMU has faced three teams currently ranked in the ITA top 50, Arkansas, LSU and Texas. In all other matches, the Mustangs have either won or been on the wrong end of 4-3 losses.

ABOUT COLUMBIA:

The Lions have a 6-1 record during the 2019 season and have risen to No. 9 in the ITA Rankings.  Columbia's lone loss came at the hands of the No. 1 team in the country, Wake Forest. They have tallied wins against No. 9 Baylor, No. 11 Notre Dame and No. 43 Northwestern. Last season Columbia made it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament as the 16 seed before losing to eventual champion Wake Forest, 4-1.  Columbia has four players ranked in the latest ITA rankings. Including Jack Lin, who is ranked No. 10 in the nation and holds a 4-2 record during the spring, No. 65 Victor Pham who is 5-1 and played line one most recently, No. 74 Adam Ambrozy and No. 89 Jackie Tang. Florida, USC, Texas, Ohio State and Stanford are the only other programs with four players with top-90 rankings. Additionally, the Lions have the No. 5 ranked doubles tandem in the country in Lin and Matheson along with two other nationally-ranked pairings.

SERIES HISTORY

Saturday will be the 18th meeting between the two programs and the fourth consecutive season they've faced off. Each of the previous 17 meeting came in Dallas. The Mustangs hold a 10-7 edge in the series though the Lions have won the last six matchups. Last season, then ninth-ranked Columbia won 4-0 against the Mustangs. On line two, Tomas Vaise forced a third set against the 38th-ranked player in the country before the match was clinched.

ABOUT WAGNER

The Seahawks head into their matchup with the Mustangs holding a 3-1 record early into the 2019 season. Wagner has wins against Queens College and conference foe St. Francis Brooklyn. Last season, the Seahawks were one game away from the NCAA Tournament as they lost in the Northeast Conference Championship final to Bryant. They finished the season 14-9 with a perfect 5-0 record at home.
