DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis topped the Dartmouth Big Green, 6-1, on Friday afternoon from the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Mustang got the day started with an impressive performance in doubles play. On court 3, Ana Perez-Lopez and Sarai Monarrez Yesaki cruised to a 6-1 win while Liza Buss and Vivienne Kulicke took care of business on No. 1 also by a 6-1 score. Karina Traxler and Anzhelika Shapovalova were up 4-2 at the time of clinch.
Singles play allowed the Mustangs to continue their momentum. They started by winning five of the first six sets. Shapovalova was the first winner with a 6-4 first set followed by a 6-0 sweep in the second. Kulicke earned a win on No. 3 with a 6-4, 7-6 decision, coming out on the right end of the second-set tiebreaker.
Buss clinched the victory for the Mustangs with her 6-3, 6-4 win on line one. Traxler pulled off an impressive comeback on No. 4. Traxler fended off two match points in the second set and forced a third set that she won in a super tiebreaker. The fifth Mustang point came from Katherine Jakeway who was locked in a lengthy battle on No. 6. Jakeway overcame a loss in the second set and won the super tiebreaker, 10-1.
The lone Dartmouth poin came on court five as Chuyanag Guan defeated Perez-Lopez in a back-and-forth three setter.
The win ended a losing spell for the Mustangs over the last month as the squad has faced a gauntlet of ranked foes. The Mustangs improve to 5-9 on the season while the Big Green fall to 3-10. SMU returns to its home court on Sunday for its first doubleheader of the season. The Mustangs face Northwestern State at 11 am followed by Abilene Christian at 4:30.
