DALLAS (SMU)Â -- No. 8/9 SMU will put its six-game winning streak on the line Saturday night when it travels to Denver for a showdown with the Denver Pioneers.Â
PULSE OF THE POLLS
SMU is ranked No. 8 in the country by United Soccer Coaches, jumping 14 spots after beating then-No. 2 Duke on the road. The Mustangs also made appearances on Top Drawer Soccer's (No. 9) and College Soccer News' (No. 15) polls.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mustangs are riding high after defeating #2 Duke, 2-0 in Durham on Monday night. Garrett McLaughlin and Knut Ahlander both scored in the match and Shane Lanson tallied his fourth clean sheet.Â
FAST START
The Mustangs are 6-0-0 for the first time since 2010, when the team started an incredible 9-0-0 before losing a match. SMU has scored 21 goals this season, including 13 in the first half. The 21 total goals are the second most in the country behind Clemson. Through five matches, the Mustangs have not trailed in any contest, and have scored first in every match.Â
BACKLINE DOMINANCE
SMU has shutout all but one of its opponents this season, only allowing 16 shots on goal this season, and just one goal. The Mustangs are one of seven teams in the country to allow one or fewer goals this season. SMU's starting backline has a combined 158 starts in their careers, led by Eddie Munjoma (48).Â
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
In SMU's recent match vs. Valpo, six Mustangs found the back of the net. It's the first time six student-athletes have scored in one game since a 7-0 win over Central Arkansas in Oct. 2014. SMU has scored six or more goals now twice this season. In the decade prior, SMU netted six or more goals just twice.Â
ESPN MAINSTAYS
The Mustangs have made two appearances in ESPN's Top-10 Plays of the Night this season. The first came on opening night when Nicky Heranandez' bike was the No. 2 play of the night. The second was on Sept. 13 when Wyatt Priest's bike was named the No. 9 play of the evening.
2019 HONORS
Talen Maples - AAC Defensive POTW (9/10)
Garrett McLaughlin - AAC Honor Roll (9/10)
Nicky Hernandez - AAC Honor Roll (9/10)
Brandon Terwege - TDS Starting XI (9/16)
Shane Lanson - National POTW (9/17), AAC Honor Roll (9/17)
LANSON STEPPING UP
Sophomore GK has started four matches and earned four clean sheets, including one vs. Duke. In his second start vs. UC Riverside, the New Orleans native clinched the victory with a penalty save in the 78th minute. Lanson was named National Player of the Week by United Soccer Coaches on Sept. 17 after another pair of shutouts vs. UC Riverside and No. 2 Duke.Â
AHLANDER ASSISTING
Knut Ahlander's five assists are a top-10 mark in the country. The midfielder has dominated on both sides of the ball forcing turnovers and spreading the wealth, recording assists to three different players. Versus Valpo, the Norway native recorded his first goal of the season. He followed that performance with a goal at No. 2 Duke.Â
MUNJOMA THE MAGNIFICENT
Eddie Munjoma recorded his first multi-goal game at SMU vs. Saint Louis. His four goals are the second-most on the team and T4 in the conference. Munjoma is getting the job done in more ways than one, as his three assists are second on the team. His 11 total points are tied for the 13th most in the nation.Â
MCLAUGHLING MAGIC
Senior forward Garrett McLaughlin shredded the Houston Baptist defense in Match 2 when the OKC native recorded his first hat trick in his SMU career. He has five goals this season, the most for the Mustangs and 11th most nationally. In 2018, McLaughlin scored three goals on the season, after scoring 14 as a sophomore. His 26 career goals are the most among active Mustangs and seventh-most among all active players nationally.
KNOW YOUR FOE
Denver has been one of the top teams in the country over the last few years. In 2018 they finished 15-4-2 and won their conference tournament. The Pioneers are 1-4-1 this season but every team they've faced has either been ranked or been receiving votes at the time of the match. Â
SERIES HISTORYÂ
The Mustangs and Pioneers have squared off four times in the past with SMU leading the season series 3-1-0. SMU and DU most recently squared off last season when the Pioneers came to Dallas and beat the Mustangs 1-0.Â
