Ethan Leon took home titles in both singles and doubles as SMU men's tennis opened the fall season over the weekend with tournaments in South Carolina and New Jersey.
 
"Very productive first competition weekend," said head coach Grant Chen. "We got to see where we matched up and a barometer of where we want to get to. We can take a lot of positives as we head back home to get ready for the next event. We need to get plenty of competition reps in to help prepare us for dual match season. Thank you to University of South Carolina and Princeton for hosting two great collegiate events"
 
Making his debut as a Mustang, Leon traveled to the Princeton's Farnsworth-Ivy Plus along with four other Mustangs. Leon rolled to a 4-0 singles record dropping just one set along the way. After a first round win, Leon edged past Lane Leschly of Harvard thanks to a critical 6-3 third-set win. With a semifinal victory over Lui of Columbia, Leon advanced to face Anthony Pero of Michigan State in the final. The freshman took home the hardware with a dominant, 6-1, 6-0 victory.
 
In doubles, Leon and partner Roberto Rosales had a 3-0 weekend that started with two wins on Friday. An 8-4 win on Sunday capped the tourney-winning run for the duo.
 
At Princeton, every Mustang earned a singles win including the four from Leon and a pair from Jan-Simon Vrbsky, who's ranked No. 94 in the ITA's preseason ranking. Vrsbky and freshman Juan Jose Bianchi registered a ranked win in doubles.
 
Five Mustangs made the trip to South Carolina to compete at the Gamecock Fall Invite.  SMU found success on Friday recording five singles wins including No. 37 Carles Sarrio advancing to the semifnals. They faced stiff competition on Saturday and Sunday with three of their losses coming to ranked opponents. Sarrio's run in the main draw came to an end as he faced Siem Woldeab of Texas who advanced to the finals after a three-setter with Sarrio. Tomas Vaise faced a ranked matchup on Sunday against Texas' Chi Chi Huang and was able to force a third set before falling, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.
 
In doubles action from Columbia, newcomer Caleb Chakravarthi teamed up with Vaise for a victory while Huntley Allen and first-year Mustang Jordi Redelijk captured a 8-7 (1) win, needing a tiebreaker to do so.
 
 
Next on the fall slate for SMU is the Rice Invitational. The tournament runs Sept. 27-29 in Houston.
