SMU women's tennis begins its 2021 spring schedule with a doubleheader against Abilene Christian on Friday, Jan. 15 at the SMU Tennis Complex. Matches with ACU are slated for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

SMU is coming off a 9-5 mark during the abbreviated 2020 season with a 5-1 mark at home. The team posted wins over strong programs including Colorado, Arizona and Wichita State. SMU faces a rematch of its 2020 opener on Friday after defeating ACU, 6-1, in Abilene to start off the season.

The 2021 Mustang squad includes five newcomers among the 12-woman roster. Second-year head coach Jeff Nevolo added three freshman, Kiana Graham, Avery Hilbig and Winslow Huth as well as two transfers in sophomore Hadley Doyle and senior Chandler Carter.  SMU returns 31 of its 46 dual match singles wins from last season and feature a roster of five seniors.

In the inaugural ITA Rankings, sophomore Jackie Nylander and senior Chandler Carter earned the No. 52 ranking in the country. Nylander returns after an impressive freshman season where she posted a 10-3 mark in the spring including 9-3 record at line one. The Swedish standout also went 10-3 at line one doubles, earning an ITA Ranking and posting three nationally-ranked wins.

Carter racked up 158 wins across all matches during her career at Wake Forest, ascending as high as No. 5 in the country in doubles. A Highland Park native, Carter helped the Deacons to NCAA Tournament wins in each of her first three seasons.

After the season opener, the Mustangs travel to Austin to meet the 4th-ranked Longhorns on Monday Jan. 18. Texas features four nationally-ranked singles players and provides the first of the nine ranked matchups on the Mustang 2021 calendar. SMU returns to the Hilltop on Jan. 22 to face McNeese State in a twin billing.
