DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Alex Stafford and sophomore John Zisette reached the championship match of the Flight 1 doubles at the Ron Wesbrooks Invitational this weekend. Zisette and freshman Eli Susser reached singles consolation finals in the event at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
 
Stafford and Zisette won 8-3 vs Lamar in the Flight 1 doubles quarterfinal and then 8-6 against the duo from Prairie View A&M in the semifinal. In the Flight 1 championship, the duo of Trinity Grear and AJ Valenty from Rice knocked off Stafford and Zisette 8-3.
 
In singles, Zisette made the Flight 2 singles consolation final. He defeated Diego Hatem from Prairie View A&M 6-3,6-2 in the semifinal before dropping a hard fought decision to Martin Garcia Ripoll of Lamar 7-6(4), 6-4. In Flight 3 singles, Susser topped Adrian Blackwell (PVAMU) 6-2,6-3 in the consolation semifinals before falling to Arthur Bugeaud of Lamar 6-1,6-4.
 
"Great for our two freshman Alex and Eli to play their first collegiate tournament and come out with a few wins," said head coach Grant Chen. "They got to experience the environment and got better with each match. All four players got valuable reps and that was the goal and focus this weekend. We have several things to focus on the next 10 days as they will prep for ITA Regionals. Johnny and Alex played some really good doubles for a new and young team but fell just short in the finals."
