HOUSTON (SMU) – SMU women's tennis went a combined 8-4 in singles and doubles at the Houston Cougar Invitational this weekend.
Katherine Jakeway and
Drew Morris each had 3-1 weekends to lead the Mustangs. After Friday was rained out, the duo started doubles with a 9-7 win over Federica Trevisan and Anna Bowtell from Rice. Morris also won a three-set singles match over Maria Dzemeshkevich from Houston 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
Lana Mavor also won her opener 6-1, 6-1 against Blanca Cortijo Parreno from UH.
"It was great to get a couple days of matches down in Houston. All four student-athletes showed a lot of growth over the weekend," said head coach
Jeff Nevolo. "Lana did a great job in her first weekend competing for SMU and I was excited that we were able to play much more disciplined doubles the final day of the event. Thanks to Houston for hosting us and adding us to the event last minute."
Jakeway and Morris split for doubles on the final day, both winning to finish 2-0 in doubles. In the matchups with Houston, Morris partnered with Mavor for an 8-5 victory. Jakeway played doubles with
Winslow Huth in their 8-5 triumph. Jakeway finished her weekend with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Saki Oyama from North Texas. Mavor and Huth also each won singles in straight sets against UNT.
The Mustangs host the SMU Red & Blue Challenge Oct. 8-10.
